All you wanted to know about probiotics, but didn't know whom to ask!

Posted: 22-Nov-2023

Does the word probiotic sound familiar? Scientific? A laboratory created term? Pro stands for 'in favour of' and the bio in biotic stands for 'life,' so a rough guess is it's something beneficial to life. And right you are! Probiotics are formally defined as "...live microorganisms (bacteria) which when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host." So, the next time you buy probiotic curd or yoghurt, you know what you're buying: it's curd fortified with beneficial, live bacteria!

There's much more to know about probiotics. Apart from a variety of foods, probiotics are used to treat diseases like urinary tract infection (UTI), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Probiotic foods can be safely made/sold at home and thus present an income generating cottage-industry opportunity.

This book written by Gregor Reid, a grand old microbiologist will fill you in on all you wanted to know about probiotics but weren't sure whom to ask.
